Write a Letter, Change a Life!
Write for Rights
A Mexican teenager is beaten by police, unable to defend himself because of his hearing impairment. A young Iranian woman is sentenced to 16 years in prison for refusing to wear the veil. A Chinese husband and father mysteriously disappears because he belongs to an “enemy” ethnic group. Young indigenous Canadians protest the mercury poisoning of the water supply on their tribal lands. These are a few of the courageous activist youths for whom Amnesty International is advocating during this year’s Write for Rights Campaign.
Amnesty International is a Nobel Prize-winning group dedicated to defending human rights around the world. We investigate cases of injustice around the world and mount letter writing campaigns to free those unjustly persecuted. And we get results! After our letter-writing campaign in support of handicapped activist Gulzar Duishenova, the president of Kyrgyzstan has recently signed a bill guaranteeing rights for the disabled.
Join us, Amnesty International USA Group 342, on the third Wednesday of each month. During the months of November and December we will participate in the annual Write for Rights Campaign by sending messages of hope to young people unjustly imprisoned and by signing letters addressed to national leaders to obtain their freedom. Our next meeting will be Wednesday, December 18 at 7:30pm in Wegmans Café, 50 Foundry Way (at Rt. 29), Malvern, PA 19355. All are invited.
Can’t make it to our meeting? Visit AIUSA’s Write for Rights page. Send a message of hope to one of the young activists and print out and sign a petition on their behalf.
